The crash of the Rio-Paris Airbus sparked off a lot of emotion. For nearly two years, the world has been trying to understand what happened to Flight AF 447. A lot of theories were thought up. Most of them were based on the failure of the Airbus' Pitot tubes but there weren't many people who imagined it could just have been the pilot making a mistake. It was only when the flight recorders were eventually found nearly 2 1/2 miles (3 900 m) beneath the surface of the sea that truth came out at last.
Beyond the questions it raises about modern flight safety and pilot training, the Rio-Paris Crash will be a textbook case in the annals of air transport.
