The basic teaching unit of Chinese Putonghua is sentence, not word. While the basic teaching unit of Chinese reading and writing is character. The nature of Chinese listening and speaking is skill training and the aim of it is focusing on recognizing sentences : mastering a certain quantity of sentences of communicating ; while the nature of Chinese reading and writing is a kind of characters learning and its aim is fixing on recognizing characters, which means to get a mastery of 2 500 common characters.
