Founded in 1847, Cartier has consistently played a leading role in the history of fine jewelry and the evolution of styles and social codes. A prolific creative force and purveyor of new ideas, Cartier has drawn on multiple sources of inspiration, from Marie-Antoinette to the Far East, via India, Egypt, and Russia. The jeweler is a virtuoso at interpreting styles, playing on unusual combinations of colors, materials, and shapes, and is renowned for its outstanding expertise. The jeweler soon became the official supplier of crowned heads, with numerous prestigious commissions from the courts of Europe and Asia, as well as from members of café society and Hollywood legends. Cartier creates models that have achieved mythical status - the Santos, Tank, and Tortue watches; the mystery clocks - and brilliantly illustrates its iconic themes and motifs, most notably the famous panther.
This catalog, featuring over seven hundred reproductions that combine jewelry, precious accessories, watches, and clocks from the Cartier Collection with period documents and portraits of prominent customers, transmits the creative energy of the famous house, telling its story as part of the cultural and historical context.
