L'Afghanistan est un pays meurtri par les rivalités tribales, les guerres de décolonisation et les conflits géopolitiques. Ses habitants le surnomment depuis toujours « pays de la rébellion ». C'est pourtant au milieu du chaos, au coeur de combats interminables, que sont nées des images époustouflantes de beauté.

Le photographe américain renommé Steve McCurry a sillonné l'Afghanistan à maintes reprises pendant plus de 40 ans, devenant l'un des reporters les plus accomplis à oeuvrer dans la région. Son célèbre portrait Jeune Afghane, repris sur la couverture d'innombrables magazines dans le monde depuis 1984, est certainement le cliché le plus marquant du photographe. Composé comme un tableau, il est aussi intemporel que les autres images de McCurry, qualités intattendues quand on sait qu'il fut pris dans une région en pleine guerre.

Steve McCurry a toujours fait face aux dangers inhérents à la vie « de terrain » des photographes. Il s'est souvent aventuré au-delà des lignes en prenant de gros risques, comme lors de sa première mission en Afghanistan, en 1979, durant laquelle il dut revêtir l'habit afghan pour traverser clandestinement la frontière avec le Pakistan. Cette route périlleuse, au coeur d'un territoire hostile, imprévisible, contrôlé tour à tour par les moudjahidin, les Russes et les talibans, McCurry l'a arpentée bien des fois. Depuis, nombre de photographes ont marché dans ses pas, mais aucun n'en est revenu avec des oeuvres aussi exemplaires.

Né à Philadelphie, Steve McCurry est depuis plus de quatre décennies l'une des figures les plus emblématiques de la photographie contemporaine avec, à son actif, des dizaines de couvertures de magazines et de livres, plus d'une douzaine d'ouvrages et d'innombrables expositions personnelles aux quatre coins du monde. Après avoir longuement parcouru l'Inde, le Moyen-Orient et l'Afghanistan, il a créé en 2004 ImagineAsia dont la mission est d'apporter des ressources et des perspectives éducatives aux enfants et aux jeunes adultes d'Afghanistan.

The distinguished American photographer Steve McCurry has traveled to Afghanistan regularly for more than 40 years : He is one of the most accomplished photographers to work in the region. His famous 1984 portrait Afghan Girl published on the covers of magazines around the world is certainly his single most striking portrait. In common with so much of McCurry's work, it has a timeless, painterly quality - entirely at odds with the battle-torn backdrop of the region in which it was taken.

Steve McCurry has always been subjected to the same dangers that are an inevitable part of life « on the road » for photographers. He has often ventured behind the lines, usually at great risk ; his first assignment in Afghanistan in 1979 involved him dressing in Afghan robes in order to be smuggled across the border from Pakistan. That journey, into the treacherous, unpredictable landscape - territory controlled at various times by the Mujahideen, the Russians, and the Taliban - was one that McCurry would make many times. Many other photographers would follow in his footsteps, but none would return with such a flawless body of work.

Steve McCurry was born in Philadelphia, PA, and has been one of the most iconic voices in contemporary photography for more than forty years, with scores of magazine and book covers, over a dozen books, and countless exhibitions around the world to his name. After numerous travels throughout India, the Middle East, and Afghanistan, he founded ImagineAsia in 2004, with the mission to help provide educational resources and opportunities to children and young adults in Afghanistan.

Wie das Gros seiner Arbeiten besitzt es eine zeitlose Qualität, es erinnert an ein Gemälde und steht damit im krassen Gegensatz zu der von Kämpfen gezeichneten Region, aus der es stammt.

Steve McCurry war unweigerlich den Gefahren ausgesetzt, die den Alltag von Fotografen in Krisengebieten prägen. Oft begab er sich hinter die Linien, meist unter gro(...)er Gefahr. Bei seinem ersten Auftrag 1979 in Afghanistan musste er afghanische Kleider anlegen, um aus Pakistan über die Grenze eingeschleust zu werden. Diese Reise in eine tückische, unberechenbare Gegend - in Gebiete, die unter der Kontrolle wahlweise der Mudschahedin, der Sowjets oder der Taliban standen - sollte McCurry noch häufig unternehmen. Viele andere Fotografen folgten seinen Fu(...)stapfen, doch keiner von ihnen kehrte mit einer derart überzeugenden Bilderfülle zurück.

Steve McCurry wurde in Philadelphia geboren und ist seit über 40 Jahren einer der bildmächtigsten Vertreter der zeitgenössischen Fotografie. Seine Fotos erschienen auf den Titelseiten vieler Zeitschriften und Publikationen, in über einem Dutzend Büchern und in zahllosen Ausstellungen weltweit.
