The Quintessential California Modernist

Richard Neutra and His Search for Modern Architecture

Originally from Vienna, Richard Neutra came to America early in his career, settling in California. His influence on postwar architecture is undisputed, the sunny climate and rich landscapes of the state being particularly well suited to his cool, sleek modern style.

Neutra had a keen appreciation for the relationship between people and nature ; his trademark plate-glass walls and ceilings that turn into deep overhangs have the effect of connecting the indoors with the outdoors. His ability to incorporate technology, aesthetics, science, and nature into his designs brought him to the forefront of Modernist architecture.

In this volume, more than 100 of Neutra's works are brought together - private homes, schools, and public buildings - illustrated by hundreds of photographs, including those of Julius Shulman and other prominent photographers.

Since we started our work as cultural archaeologists in 1980, TASCHEN has become synonymous with accessible publishing, helping bookworms around the world curate their own library of art, anthropology, and aphrodisia at an unbeatable price. The 45 series presents new editions of some of the stars of our program - now more compact, even friendlier in price, and still realized with the same commitment to impeccable production. Celebrate 45 years of books for optimists : inclusive, independent, and inspirational.

The photographer : American photographer Julius Shulman's images of Californian architecture have burned themselves into the retina of the 20th century. Some of his architectural photographs, like the iconic shots of Frank Lloyd Wright's or Pierre Koenig's remarkable structures, have been published countless times. The brilliance of buildings like those by Charles Eames, as well as those of his close friend Richard Neutra, was first brought to light by Shulman's photography. Each Shulman image unites perception and understanding for the buildings and their place in the landscape.
