In the heart of the Gorges de l'Ardèche, the Saint-Marcel Cave is uncontestably a treasure of French natural heritage. In the show cave, visitors discover the magnitude of the volumes, the vast palette of mineral shades and the imposing architecture of the cave formations. The two emblematic sights - the rimstone pools, with their clear waters sublimated by the lighting, and the vast Galerie des Peintres [Painters' passage], with its reliefs shaped by erosion - offer an unforgettable spectacle. But the Saint-Marcel Cave, with its systems extending over 64 kilometres, is also a « classical'' karst cave, unmissable for any caver, and an inexhaustible source of inspiration for anyone who takes the time to contemplate it. Philippe Crochet and Annie Guiraud invite us to a soul-deep immersion in the depths of the Saint-Marcel Cave system, where science, art and poetry converge to celebrate this exceptional heritage.

Philippe Crochet has been caving since his teens. With his parallel interest in photography, he rapidly set himself the objective of bringing back images from the underground world. His passion led him to a career as a hydrogeologist after obtaining his doctorate in engineering from the University of Montpellier. Annie Guiraud, his wife, has always shared his fascination for caves and mineral landscapes. She takes part in all his photo shoots, acting as both photography assistant and model. The couple's international reputation has led to invitations from all over the world to view the most beautiful caves. Their photographs have regularly been honoured with awards in French and international competitions, and have illustrated numerous publications. Chrystèle Voyeau, director of the Saint-Marcel Cave, draws poetic inspiration from this underground journey. Her texts, like a lifeline through the cave's passages, reveal another dimension of this mineral world: the whispering of history, telling us of the cave's grandeur and mystery. Several authors specialising in the cave contributed to the introductory part of this book, under the direction of Delphine Dupuy (Saint-Marcel Cave science unit), they are: Judicael Arnaud, Marc Faverjon, Jean-Louis Issartel, Nicolas Lateur and Ludovic Mocochain.
