Resulting from individual initiative or produced in small batches within units, these camouflaged helmets are impressive by their historical dimension, their singularity and the moving significance of objects recovered from the battlefield.
From the crude and elementary mottling with issue or civilian paints to the imaginative and complicated patterns evolved within combat units, the veteran soldier also completed his work by adding texturing elements.
The wide array of more than 150 original helmets shown here captures the general trends of camouflage on the Normandy front. Most were photographed in natural light, to faithfully reproduce their colours.
