©Electre 2024

ARMOR IN NORMANDY

The British

The prospect of the Overlord landings in Normandy caused the British to completely reappraise the role of armor in their planning.
To capture and hold the beaches they employed an entirely new doctrine based largely on the deployment of a whole range of unusual designs and specialist vehicles; amphibious tanks, mine destroyers, bridging devices...
As well as using novel ideas the British also relied on sheer strength of number and used far more tanks during the landings than did their American allies.
This mini-guide considers in detail the various British armored formations ; their structure and the type of vehicles with which they were equipped, their combat tacflcs and method of deployment.
