Seatood market studies for the introduction of new aquaculture products

Aquaculture production in the Mediterranean has expanded rapidly over the last years. Production techniques have progressed as a result of efforts by the private sector and the scientific community. However, in order to but problems have concurrently been faced. To deal with emerging issues and to maintain momentum, regional cooperation was required to effectively tackle future development of the sector. Four international networks, involving partnerships between UN organizations (FAO), Mediterranean regional (CIHEAM) and national institutions have been established under the aegis of the Committee on Aquaculture of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM). These networks are TECAM (Technology of Aquaculture in the Mediterranean), SELAM (Socio-economic and Legal Aspects of Aquaculture in the Mediterranean EAM (Environment and Aquaculture in the Mediterranean) and SIPAM (System of Information for the Promotion of Aquaculture in the Mediterranean). At present, subject activities covered by the TECAM network include nutrition, genetics and breeding, production technology, health management and species diversification. The SELAM network includes marketing production economics and aquaculture planning. Activities related to environmental aspects previously covered by the EAM network, have, since 1999, been covered by the TECAM and SELAM networks.

Both TECAM and SELAM networks are coordinated by the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM) which has been organizing and implementing its activities through the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Zaragoza (IAMZ) in close collaboration with FAO Fisheries Department and other Mediterranean institutions.

It includes manuscripts of the presentations (reviews and technical papers) made at the Seminar, a report on the main conclusions and recommendations of the Seminar, and a set of Country Reports on Seafood Consumption and General Trends in Demand, not only from project partners (France, Greece, Italy, Norway, Portugal and United Kingdom), but also from other Mediterranean countries, i.e. Cyptus, Morocco and Turkey.
