L'Europe, l'Inde et la Chine : Partenaires stratégiques dans un monde en mutation

Europe, India and China : Strategic partners in a changing world

Relations between the European Union, India and China today are of central importance for international trade, global economic stability and world peace. Strategic partnerships link the EU and India and the EU and China. They provide a framework for the development of an increasing range of shared interests ranging far beyond trade. This book analyses and assesses these relations. The first part concerns the development of strategic partnerships between the EU and India and the EU and China. The second part focuses on the contents of strategic partnerships, including negotiating strategies, environmental protection, arms embargo, human rights, cultural diversity and regulation of pharmaceutical products. It emphasizes the extent to which each partner values the strategic partnership while nonetheless maintaining its own priorities. The third part looks beyond strategic partnerships by placing these bilateral relations in the context of developments in the Central Asian region and of regional integration in both the EU and ASEAN.

This bilingual volume comprises a selection of the revised versions of papers first presented at the 5th International Workshop for Young Scholars (WISH) / 5e Rencontre Internationale des Jeunes Chercheurs (RIJC). The 5th WISH/RIJC was held in Aix-en-Provence on 17-18 November 2006 on the theme 'Europe, India and China : Strategic Partners in a Changing World' / 'L'Europe, l'Inde et la Chine : Partenaires stratégiques dans un monde en mutation'. It was organised by the European Law Journal, together with the Centre d'Études et de Recherches Internationales et Communautaires (CERIC-CNRS-UMR 6201) of the Faculté de Droit et de Science Politique of the Université Paul Cézanne Aix-Marseille III and the College of Europe (Natolin campus, Warsaw). Sponsors included the Centre for European Studies at Peking University : Tsinghua Law School, Tsinghua University, Beijing ; and the Institute of European Studies, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Beijing. WISH/RIJC is an annual conference which seeks to bring together the most promising young scholars in specific fields of European Union law from universities of the EU Member States, countries that are currently candidates for EU membership, and other countries in North and South America, the Middle East, Africa or Asia, including the United States, Canada, and China. Its objective is to identify and discuss themes which are likely to be the most significant topics of research in the field of European Union law in the first half of the 21st century
