This collection of essays is centered on the Gospel according to Matthew. It treats contemporary discussions of Matthew's origins, character and place in the canon of the New Testament. It also discusses texts from the major sections of the Gospels : the Infancy narrative, the Sermon on the Mount and other parts of the public ministry, and the Passion narrative. It addresses major themes : the kingdom of God, revelation, the Sabbath, spirituality, ecclesiology, and the birth of Easter faith. It also includes aspects of Matthew's broader context : Qumran literature, the letters to the Galatians and of James, and John's reception of Matthew. In contrast to several recent studies which present Matthew and his community as gloomy and beleaguered, this work reveals a confident, cheerful evangelist.

Diese Sammlung von Studien befasst sich mit dem Evangelium nach Matthäus und behandelt aktuelle Diskussionen der Herkunftsbereiche des Matthäus, seiner Eigenart und des Platzes, welchen sein Evangelium im Kanon des Neuen Testamentes einnimmt. Ebenso werden Texte aus den Hauptteilen des Evangeliums diskutiert, wie die Kindheitserzählung, die Bergpredigt, andere Begebenheiten des öffentlichen Wirkens Jesu und die Leidensgeschichte, und Hauptthemen herausgestellt, wie das Königreich Gottes, die Offenbarung, der Sabbat, die Spiritualität, die Ekklesiologie und die Geburt des Osterglaubens. Auch wird der weitere Kontext des Matthäus-Evangeliums berücksichtigt, wie die Literatur von Qumran, die Briefe an die Galater und des Jakobus und die Rezeption von Matthäus durch Johannes. Im Gegensatz zu vielen aktuellen Studien, die Matthäus und seine Gemeinde als düster und dunkel darstellen, enthüllen diese Aufsätze Matthäus als selbstbewussten und heiteren Evangelisten.
